The Downs School Hockey Team
Representing Herefordshire
at the
West of England Championships
for the tenth consecutive year.
Herefordshire’s County Hockey Tournament was held at Leominster Leisure Centre and the Under 13 Boys’ competition was won by The Downs School. The Downs School U13 Boys' Hockey team will now go onto represent Herefordshire at the West of England Hockey Championship at Millfield School in March where they will play against some of the best schools and clubs in the Western region.
The boys comfortably won their ‘round robin’ group and semi final but came up against a strong Kington team in the final. Despite conceding one goal in the first few minutes, The Downs dominated territory and scored two quick goals later in the match to secure the title.
Coach, Chris Buckley, stated “this was the finest performance by a Downs’ side that I have seen in the last ten year of coaching Hockey at The Downs. The boys should be commended on their team play and selflessness in passing the ball. The standard of this year’s Hockey was very high and it is a credit to the boys that they were able to raise their game particularly in the final”.
The Under 11 team from The Downs were also finalists but narrowly lost out to the Kington boys who scored with the very last touch of the game.

Tennis
Year 5 pupil Hugo Davies (aged 9) was invited to represent the county of Gloucestershire in the Super-G Grand Prix tennis tournament involving teams from Gloucestershire, Herefordshire & Worcestershire and Avon. Each county put forward a team of 8 players (4 boys and 4 girls) and each player had to take part in a number of singles, doubles and mixed doubles short-set matches.
It was an extremely close event and everything went down to the wire in the last thrilling match of the day and a Championship tie break, where Gloucestershire finally lost out to winners Avon by one single point!
The tournament was attended by Roger Draper, Chief Executive of the Lawn Tennis Association (pictured above with the Glos team including Hugo 2nd row 3rd from left), who presented awards to each of the players who took part.
Colts Rugby
The Downs School, Colwall had a successful start to their rugby season by winning the Cup competition at The Elms Under 11 Sevens Tournament.
The tournament involved schools from all over the region. The boys won the final against The Elms A team with a dramatic last minute try.
Throughout the afternoon the boys played with great commitment and pride and thoroughly deserved their victory.
Squash
William Vanston
Will began playing squash at the age of nine by attending Saturday Junior coaching at Hereford Whitecross Club.
Being left handed he developed an unusual double handed back hand which although not unique is fairly uncommon in squash.
He won the first tournament he entered for beginners and followed this up by winning the Under 11 Club Championships in 2004 and 2005 and the Under 13 Junior County Closed 2005/2006 and was Under 15 Junior County Closed Runner-up 2005/2006....
